10 escrow mistakes Nigerians make (and how to avoid them)
By HarrenaPay Team · 21 May 2026 · 3 min read
Escrow is powerful, but only when both sides use it properly. Most of the disputes that go sideways in Nigerian escrow are not because escrow failed, they are because somebody bypassed the protection that escrow already offered. Here are the ten most common mistakes and how to avoid each one.
1. Agreeing on vague deliverables
"iPhone 13" is not a specification. Is it 128 or 256 GB? Battery health? Original box? Charger included? Vague agreements become impossible disputes. Always include model, capacity, condition, accessories, colour and any defects in the written agreement.
2. Releasing the money before testing
In Nigeria, buyers sometimes release on receipt of the package, before opening. Then they open it and find the wrong item. Once released, getting it back is much harder. Open, test, verify, then release.
3. Splitting the transaction outside escrow
"I will send 50,000 in escrow and the other 50,000 directly to your account." No. This kills the protection entirely. If anything goes wrong, you can only dispute the escrow portion. Put 100 percent through escrow or do not use escrow at all.
4. Trusting a "verified" badge without checking the agreement
A green badge on a profile does not mean the deal you are about to do is safe. The agreement, the deliverables and the timeline matter more than the seller's badge.
5. Using a WhatsApp middleman and calling it escrow
A person holding the money in their personal Opay is not escrow, it is a single point of failure. Real escrow holds funds in a CBN regulated account, not someone's wallet.
6. Skipping BVN or KYC verification
If a Nigerian escrow lets you skip BVN, it is doing you no favours, it is creating a scammer haven. Verify both parties. The five minutes saves you five thousand naira times a hundred.
7. Setting an auto release timer and forgetting
Some escrow services auto release after X days unless you dispute. If you travel, forget, or do not check the app, the money releases automatically. For high value items, always use manual release.
8. Ignoring the chat trail
The in app chat IS the evidence. Move the conversation to WhatsApp because it is faster, and you lose half your dispute evidence. Keep negotiation, change requests and confirmations inside the escrow chat.
9. Sending without verified shipping
For physical items, always use a logistics provider that gives you a tracking number you can share inside the escrow chat. "I dropped it at the park, the driver will call you" is not shipping, it is a hope.
10. Underestimating fees in the negotiation
Decide who pays the escrow fee BEFORE you fund. Otherwise the seller receives less than expected, gets annoyed, and the goodwill that escrow was supposed to build evaporates.
The fix is one habit
If you make one change, make this: put the entire deal inside escrow, including the chat, the agreement, the deliverables and the timeline. Every shortcut around the system reopens the risks the system was designed to close.
